How Acoustic Neuroma Is Diagnosed

Diagnosis often brings unfamiliar tests and language. Knowing the purpose of each step can make appointments feel more manageable.

Hearing assessment

An audiogram can show whether hearing differs between ears and how clearly speech is understood. Your specialist may recommend additional hearing or balance testing depending on your symptoms.

MRI

MRI is the main imaging test used to identify and characterize vestibular schwannoma. Your team reviews its location, dimensions, relationship to nearby nerves and brain structures, and any prior imaging for change.

Specialist review

Care may involve neurotology, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology, audiology, and other rehabilitation specialists. A multidisciplinary opinion can be especially helpful when more than one management path is reasonable.
